Obituary for John Shaw

 John Shaw
SHAW, John Charles (1934-2016) The family announces with sorrow John’s peaceful passing on Thursday Dec 15th, 2016 at the age of 82, after a short but feisty struggle with a blood disorder. John was born in Cobalt to pharmacist Fred Shaw and school teacher Edythe (nee Jago). John and his late sister Marnie spent a happy childhood in Cobalt. John could (too) easily be encouraged to sing “The Cobalt Song” and always had a story to tell proudly about his hometown. John graduated from U of T Dentistry in 1956 and he and wife Gwen (nee Miller) moved to Timmins to work and raise their family. John practiced dentistry for 50 years. He was proud to have served generations of Timmins families and was always pleased to see his patients, their children and grandchildren, who were often patients too. John was passionate about his varied and interesting lifelong interests: As a dedicated community volunteer, he supported the Terry Fox Run, Special Olympics, Canadian Red Cross Society and minor hockey; As an athlete, he was an original distance runner, starting the Timmins Stragglers Running Club, organizing marathons and relay races across the country while inspiring a generation of local runners; As a rink rat from Cobalt, he played hockey his whole life and thought of the Mac as a cathedral, although he did slow down at 81 with a hockey shoulder injury; As a community organizer, he organized local running competitions, the Timmins-Greenland Winter Games, the original Timmins Goldrush Triathlon and numerous long distance relay runs; As a recreational pilot, he was inspired to get his first pilot’s license at 16 by a Cobalt man who flew Spitfires in World War Two and he flew his beloved Cessna 170 B FFPO on wheels, skis and floats. His last great adventure was rediscovering the plane crash site of Leaf player Bill Barilko and local dentist Henry Hudson, an achievement and experience which had an enduring place in his heart. John and Gwen’s 56 year marriage produced four children (subsidiaries John called them): David (Christine), Mat (Julie), Stephen and Cheryl, and six grandchildren: Owen, Zachary, Olivia, Jacob, Liah and Aaron; He will be remembered by his nieces Sandra (Fred) Shelagh and Sharlene Grant and their children Scott, Kaila and Alicia, other extended family members and good friends, such as Ralph McKinnon and Archie Chenier. Dad loved his life and those he spent it with. The family appreciates the excellent care and concern John received during his illness from staff at Timmins District Hospital, Health Sciences North Sudbury and Ornge. John had boundless energy and a love of life. He was a great life partner, dad, grampa, father-in-law and friend. We will miss him but he has left us with great experiences and memories. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at St. Matthew's Cathedral. The family asks for any donations to be made to Kidsport so all kids can enjoy participating in sports. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.p.m. at the
