Obituary for Eveline Blahey

Eveline Blahey
It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Eveline Constance (Melenchuk) Blahey, our loving and devoted Mom, Baba, Aunt, Cousin, Sister-in-law and friend to all whose lives she touched, on Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

Eveline left us while living at WenLeigh Longterm Care residence in Mississauga, Ontario in her 93rd year.

Born July 4, 1929 in Fairlight, Saskatchewan to cattle farmers Joseph and Lucy Melenchuk. Eveline ventured East to visit her Aunt Connie (Krupka) who resided in Schumacher, Ontario and never went back home to Saskatchewan. During her visit, she met Connie’s nephew William (Bill) Blahey, who became her loving husband of 58 years. Bill worked at his family store in Timmins, Ontario where Eveline was hired as a bookkeeper. Bill was chided that he married Eveline so he would not have to pay her wages.

Eveline was the beloved mother of Brian (Lauri), Dianna and Michael. Proud grandmother of Natalie (Denis), Sarah, Matthew, Stephanie and Spencer, great grandmother to Taylor (Jeff) and great, great grandmother to Leighton. Endearing sister-in-law of Germaine Blahey of North Bay. And loving Baba to Zelda, who was her faithful fur-companion.

Preceding her in death were her devoted husband Bill (William), her loving parents Lucy & Joseph, her mother-in-law Anne Blahey (Krupka), her sisters Beatrice (Betty) and Mildred (Milly), her brothers Walter, Edward (Ed), and William (Bill).

Eveline lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker and Bill’s back-up bookkeeper/cashier at Blahey’s Timmins Ltd. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, and a world traveller, meeting life-long friends along the way.

She loved to entertain and always had an open door policy welcoming strangers from all walks of life to a home cooked meal. Eveline was skilled with knitting needles and crochet hooks, making treasured items for her family. She was an avid bowler at Mike’s Midtown Bowl. Eveline loved going to the Casino and enjoyed weekly card parties. She also found great pleasure in working on word searches. Eveline loved people and never was one to shy away from a person in need.

Most of all Eveline loved her family and instilled in her children strong values that have served them well. She also cherished her numerous nieces and nephews. After moving down South, she enjoyed visits with her sister Milly, cousin Clifford Krupka and his wife Kathy. Eveline will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

A special thank you to John Checchini who called our mother every week to just say hello. She looked so forward to his calls.

A highlight in our Mother’s life was when she was chosen for a promo on CTV News and Global News to help showcase the partnership between the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Alzheimers Society. Individual, virtual concerts were performed weekly by various members of the TSO for those afflicted with Alzheimers.

Lastly, we are indebted to the Brunel staff at the Peel Alzheimer Day Care Centre. This organization was extremely good to our mother and helped her have a quality life in spite of this horrible disease.

A celebration of Eveline’s life will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from the Miron-Wilson Chapel (Deacon Michel Néron officiating). Interment at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Reception Lounge at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations to the Alzheimer society would be greatly appreciated. in lieu of flowers.
