Condolences

Condolence From: Irena Aleknevicius
Condolence: What a spitfire of a lady! For the past couple of years I would hurry up and get dressed so I wouldn't miss seeing and then interacting with Yolande (my neighbour) on her daily early morning sojourn walking many laps around the parking lot at St. Mary's Manor. She was usually the ONLY senior doing all these laps, and sometimes we walked together while chatting about her days on the farm, family life, gardening, and current events. She was "sharp as a tack" and I admired her logical intelligence, feistiness, big kind heart, happy disposition, positive outlook, determination, sweet laugh and the many hugs we enjoyed prior to the lockdowns. I am not kidding when I say she was hard to keep up with (and I am decades younger). Sometimes she would say stuff like "Would you like to take a rest?" while we were walking...lol. Yolande used to like watching me work in my garden, and last year I planted a flower bed just for her and called it "Yolande's Garden". She liked that. This year, I couldn't figure out why I didn't see Yolande making her rounds and leaning over the cement wall to look for me in my backyard...I knew she was so active and careful with her diet and exercise, so even though she was 94, she talked, walked, and acted a good 30 years younger. Let me give you an example. Last fall in October 2020, I was harvesting carrots in my garden and Yolande casually leaned over the 14 foot high cement wall looking over my yard and she called out "Whatchya doin'? She knew darn well what I was doing....I was harvesting my produce and I knew she missed the fresh veggies she pulled out of her own garden years back. I quickly pulled the biggest carrot and tossed it up about 17 feet into the air....and even with her impaired vision, she caught the carrot in her left hand (she's right handed) with carrot greens swishing her face. I was amazed...and she beamed a huge smile and laughed and humbly said something like "pretty good, eh? ...but I used to catch better before!" I was very surprised by her passing. And woefully sad. I thought for sure she'd live to see 100. I miss her. Even though I have health issues, she helped to inspire me to work past my pain. She did this just by the mere act of getting up early EVERY morning and walking a mile, rain or shine, or even in 25 deg. below zero weather, and seeing the beauty in each and every day. Rest in peace my friend. Your steps through this life have brought inspiration, joy, and love to all who knew you.
