Shank, Vital (1948-2023)
It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Vital Oscar Shank at 75 years old on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. Vital was born on January 6, 1948 in Bonfield, Ontario to late Justine Thibeault and late Henry Shank. He was the dear brother of Norman, Patrick and late Aline. Also left to mourn are; his godson Donald Shank, his nephews Yvan, André, Stephane Shank, and Daniel Chartrand and his nieces Geneviève and Carole Chartrand. Although Vital never had any children of his own, he leaves behind the legacy of thousands of his athletes, students and coworkers over the 50 years of the track club and his 20+ years of teaching. He coached and taught multiple generations of the same families over the decades. The track/soccer complex exists because of his determination to make sure that Timmins had a facility that was comparable if not better than those in the south. After his retirement, he spent his time split between the cottage, fishing in the summer and Tampa in the winter cheering on his beloved Lightning and golfing with his Florida friends. He will be missed, think fondly of him when you remember him yelling at you for whatever reason on the track, on the field, on the court and yes even in the classroom. He was not a saint, far from it but he was dedicated to those he taught, coached and worked with. He will be missed. A memorial reception will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2023 in the Miron-Wilson Reception Lounge. Remembrance donations to the Vital Shank memorial bursary fund (Cheques payable to: École secondaire catholique Thériault - Bourse) would be greatly appreciated. La famille annonce avec grande tristesse son décès à l’âge de 75 ans le mardi 6 juin 2023. Vital est né le 6 janvier 1948 à Bonfield, Ontario.  Il fut prédécédé par ses parents Justine Thibeault et Henry Shank et par sa sœur Aline. Il laisse dans le deuil ses frères Norman et Patrick.  Cher oncle de son filleul Donald Shank et de ses neveux Yvan, André, Stéphane Shank et Daniel Chartrand ainsi que ses nièces Geneviève et Carole Chartrand. Bien que Vital n'ait jamais eu d’enfants, il donne son héritage à ses milliers athlètes, à ses anciens élèves et à ses collègues qui a eu l’honneur de les coacher et enseigner avec l’aide de ses collègues.  Vital fut responsable du club d’athlétisme depuis 50 ans et fut un enseignant dévoué pendant plus de 20 années. Il a entraîné et enseigné à plusieurs générations de mêmes familles au fil des décennies. Le complexe d’athlétisme et de soccer existe en raison de sa détermination afin que Timmins ait une installation comparable, si non meilleure, que celles des villes du sud. À sa retraite, il a passé son temps soit à son chalet, à faire de la pêche en été et à vivre à Tampa en hiver. En Floride, il aimait encourager ses bien-aimés Lightning et à jouer au golf avec ses amis. Vital nous manquera énormément.  Nous ne n’oublierons jamais son style de coaching, surtout lorsqu'il nous criait pour une raison quelconque sur la piste, sur les terrains de sports et, oui, même en classe. Il n’était pas un saint, loin delà, mais il était dévoué à ceux et à celles qu’il enseignait, entraînait et avec qui il travaillait. Son sens d’humour nous manquera énormément.  Une réception commémorative aura lieu le jeudi 8 juin de 18h à 20h dans la salle deréception du Salon funéraire Miron-Wilson.
