I met Roman while working at the Kidd Creek Mines Exploration office in Timmins. He was in the Overburden Group while I was on the Geophysics team. I always remember passing him at the shaker table in the morning. He would nod and light up the room with that big grin and florescent blue eyes. Eventually his roll changed and he came over to our side. We ran many surveys in the bush around Timmins and at the mine site. We got to know each other well as the months went by but he always had to slip away to Quebec on the weekends. Man of mystery, but all secrets eventually come out and this secret’s name was Celine. He always grinned brighter and longer when the conversation came around to Celine. In the winter, which is ten months long in Timmins, we’d sit in the truck with the engine running and have our lunch before heading back out to continue the electromagnetic survey. These were the times we’d share our life stories, or horse around with those big boots, parkas, and snow shoes to see who could look the most ridiculous. When Kidd Creek was bought by Falconbridge, they disbanded the Geophysical team so I returned to Toronto, but not before Roman asked if I’d be his best man. I agreed of course. I left geophysics and became a computer programmer and got married too. He was the MC at my wedding. As the years went by and the kids came along for both of us, we didn’t keep in touch as often, but he and his lovely wife Celine were always just as if you talked to them yesterday, even though a year had passed. The mining world slumped for too many years and Roman wisely left it to become a teacher. I had no doubt he’d be a good one. Now life had taken another turn and unfortunately we won’t see him for a while. I will miss you my friend, until we meet again.
Peter
