Obituary for Janet Alison Slaney (North)

Janet Alison Slaney (North)
It is with great sadness the family of Janet Alison Slaney ( nee North) announce her passing in Timmins, Ontario, Canada on July 28, 2020 at the age of 84. Janet was born on July 04, 1936 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, England to Wilfred and Doris ( nee Moore) North.

After her marriage to Alan Slaney, they immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Timmins. While Alan went underground as a miner, Janet held a variety of jobs to help make ends meet. Eventually, Janet would become a baker and cake decorator at the local Woolworths. Janet raised 3 children; Steven Slaney (Watford, ON), Rev. Angela Cory (Saint John, NB) and Stewart (Sheila) Slaney (Oshawa, ON).

Our home was very much a British household. Mom made roast beef, potatoes and yorkshire pudding almost every Sunday. Janet embraced Canada and each Sunday usually featured a long walk in the bush to explore abandoned mine sites. Winter meant snowshoeing highlighted by a fire and a mug of tea. Janet loved garage sales and Friday night she would be combing through the classifieds and planning the Saturday morning foray. If you needed something, you could put an order in, and Janet could usually find it at a garage sale. Janet was also an avid reader, reading several books a week. She also enjoyed her flowers, which weren't easy to grow in the clay like soil. Janet enjoyed travelling. She especially loved going home to see her brothers and sisters and catching up on recent family news. When mom could no longer go for walks, she was happy to watch, through the living room window, the wildlife activity in the backyard.

Besides her husband Alan, Janet is survived by brothers John (Anthea) North, Jeff (Louise) North, and sisters Carol Wheat, Josie Riding. Sister-in-law Jean North. Nieces and nephews, Sharon, Martin and Joanne, Nicola and James, Jane and Rachel, Sarah and John, Laura and Daniel and their father Brian Wilson. Janet will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Chad (Rachel), Shauna (Jon) and Kirsten, Andrew (Victoria) and Spencer. Great grandchildren Erin and Leia.

Janet is predeceased by her brother Bill North and her sister Elizabeth Wilson. Brothers-in-law John Wheat and Chris Riding. Son-in-law Mcpl S. Blair Cory. Mother and Father Wilfred and Doris North and Father and Mother-in-law Samual and Louisa Slaney.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Timmins Hospital for their care and kindness. We would also like to send a big thank you to neighbors Julien (Skip) and Carole Veillette for all their care and kindness.

In keeping with Janet's wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment of her ashes will take place at a later date in Watford, ON. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Janet can be made to Operation Smile, the RSPCA, the Red Cross, or the charity of the donor's choice. The funeral arrangements are entrusted with the
