Obituary for George Rusenstrom

George Rusenstrom
It is with sorrow that his family announces the passing of George Edgar Rusenstrom, on Tuesday January 12, 2021, at Timmins and District Hospital, at the age of 79. He was the loving husband of his first wife, the late Iris Rusenstrom (nee MacMillan) and of his present wife, Dolores Rusenstrom (Charette, nee Bolger). He is survived by his sisters Helen Lefebvre (Luke), Teresa Mix (Gary) and Isabel Rusenstrom, his daughter Natalie Bullock (Mark) and sons Glen Rusenstrom (Kelly-Anne) and Darryl Rusenstrom, his stepchildren Michelle Renaud (Dan) and Bill Charette (Judith) as well as grandchildren Eternity (Spencer), David (Jamie), Aaron, Daniel and Jasmine, great-grandson Remington, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his mother Simone Mineault, his father Edgar Rusenstrom, his brother Arthur (Sharyn) and his granddaughter Sage.

After the death of his father when he was 16, George, to provide for his family, putting their well-being first, left school to become an apprentice electrician at the McIntyre Mine. Over a long and successful career he rose to the position of Maintenance Specialist at the Kidd Creek mine site. As a young man, George was an avid hunter and fisherman. As a target shooter, he was a founding member of the Timmins Golden Nugget Gun Club. He played hockey and made many contributions to the development of the sport in Timmins, as a founder and the founding president of the Timmins and District Old Timers’ Hockey League and president of the Confederation Old Timers’ Hockey League. In retirement, he became an enthusiastic and accomplished woodworker. Later he took up backyard gardening and produced a profusion of vegetables from a tiny plot. George loved to play golf. When he could arrange it, he played almost every day. He was a member at the Hollinger Golf Club and served for a time as its President. When he couldn’t meet them on the golf course, he liked to join his golf buddies for coffee at McDonald’s. George was exceedingly fortunate in his two marriages. He and Iris took great pleasure in their children and made sure that they could enjoy sports, hobbies, travel and other experiences which neither of them had as young people, because their circumstances required them to begin work at an early age. Later, they welcomed their grandchildren with enthusiasm, and often travelled south for visits. Dolores was George’s second great love. Together they enjoyed their winters in Florida, where, as in Timmins, they had many good friends. They travelled frequently on bus tours and cruises and visited Europe. They were also faithful in attending graduations, sporting events, concerts, recitals and anything else which involved their beloved grandchildren.

George passed away peacefully after a nearly two year battle with cancer. The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful staff of the Oncology Department and of Hospice at the Timmins and District Hospital. Your skill and compassion were of help beyond measure during a very difficult time. As per George’s wishes, cremation has taken place. In light of current Covid 19 restrictions and to protect the health of friends and family, the family has decided to hold a celebration of life at a later date. Remembrance donations to the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation – Hospice or to Diabetes Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are entrusted with the
