Obituary for Frederick "Fred" M. Clark

Frederick "Fred" M. Clark
On Thursday ,January 20, 2022, we said goodbye to our dear Fred, a loving and caring husband to Sandy (Lobb), and brother to Bruce and Bob(deceased). He was the “ father-of-the- bride” to his loving sister-in-law Jenny, when she married Alan, after our father had passed away. He was immensely proud of our 3 sons, Steve (Trish), Chris (Amy) and Jay. His bragging rites always focused on them and his 8 grandchildren, who filled his world with laughter and joy…Devin and Austin, Jack, Harry, Oscar and Audrey, and Anderson and Rudy (mother Lisa). He rarely missed an event any of the grandkids were participating in…graduations, birthday parties, Science Fairs, plays, track meets, cross country, basketball, golf, hockey, and tennis. He loved sports and shared that enthusiasm with all of us. Teaching the kids to ski down the slopes of Caswell’s and golf at Eagle Lake Golf Club or playing Monday night basketball at the high school gym, he gave the most important thing a parent can give their children-his time. One of his great joys was playing summer basketball on the same team as Steve and Chris. He went to every tennis match, even if , in failing mobility, he viewed from the car. Fred never stopped cheering for the Buffalo Bills throughout his 87 years! This might be their year, as a thank you to their oldest cheerleader!
Fred was a teacher and principal, starting his career as a teacher in Niagara Falls at age 20 and ending it as a principal with the now Near North Board of Education. He was loved by the staff and students alike. He went “to bat” for the underdog and always attempted to make a difference in their lives. He cared! Mathematics was his “long suit” and with his supply of jujubes, tried to make it fun for those who struggled. Post retirement after 35 years, Fred became an advisor for Investors Group for 10 years, an interesting career change, also building on his strengths with numbers. And speaking of math, who doesn’t have time for a game of bingo bango bongo which has now been passed down to the next generation.
Fred was a very community-minded person. As a Lions Club member he was heavily involved in Winter Carnivals in Sundridge, where we lived for 37 years, before moving to Timmins. Growing up he played in many marching bands and using those talents, he led the drummers, along with all 3 sons, in the Sundridge Lions Bugle Band. He taught them the snare drums, but proudly marched in alll the parades, with the big bass drum. The band travelled every year to Lions conventions, part of the fun of it all. In addition, Fred spear-headed the building of a new playground at Sundridge Public School, because there was nothing but an old set of swings for the kids at recess. Ironically, Chris was the first casualty of the playground, breaking his arm falling off the equipment! Fred started a house league hockey program on Saturday nights for kids that couldn’t play travelling hockey because he didn’t have those opportunities when he was a kid. However, he did play football as a quarterback for the Niagara Falls Thunderbirds, a semi-pro intermediate team, an experience he loved.
We were blessed with a circle of wonderful friends over the years, which he treasured. Many of those friends were a part of numerous ski, golf and camping trips across Canada and the USA which were full of fun and laughter. He loved the cottage on Lake Bernard, where many summers were spent fishing, boating, or simply in front of the campfire. He loved an evening playing bridge, cribbage or chess…so many wonderful memories.
Throughout his life, music was paramount. Blessed with a lovely bass voice he sang in our Zion church choir, and for the Almaguin Choral Society, our singing family, which put on Christmas Concerts, Gospel Concerts and Cabarets. He loved every minute of those productions, but also contributed as choir treasurer, ticket master, stage set up and any other way he could help. Fred was the ultimate volunteer! Hope you are now singing with the heavenly choir!
Over the last 22 years, we spent winters in Texas, which he really enjoyed. It was so nice to spend warm winter days on the golf course, enjoying a good book or socializing with close friends. But now the time has come to cherish these memories and to know what a positive role model he was for the next generations of Clarks. Fred was kind, thoughtful, and caring: he had a great sense of humour, and was a true gentleman. We will miss you dear Fred….you were the love of our lives. Thanks for being a wonderful soulmate and life partner. Now we begin a new journey, but we will know you are always by our sides.
