Obituary for Dr. John Sullivan

SULLIVAN, DR. JOHN (1927-2019)
On Saturday, May 18, after a long illness, Dr John Burke Sullivan passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Dad was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Jane Sullivan (née Burke), his brother Dr Joseph Sullivan and sister Ann Aboud, his siblings-in-law Gilles and Germaine Racicot, Mark Rumball, Bruno Fregonese and Gerry Racicot (Frances). He leaves behind the love of his life, Patricia Sullivan (née Racicot), his children, Patricia Bosnick (Ned), Joe, Peter and John Sullivan (Renée Lévis), Timothy and Christopher Sullivan, as well as his adored grandchildren, Sarah, Peter, Tim, Amy, Matthew, Ella and Sam Sullivan, Olivier Lévis and Lili and Théo Lévis-Sullivan, and his daughter-in- law Ann McLaughlin. Dad will be missed by his two sisters-in-law, Jeannine Rumball and Claudette Fregonese. Dad also had many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly, the Fregoneses, Racicots, Abouds and Rumballs.

Dad’s most important milestone, as far as we’re concerned, was his marriage to our mother Pat, in Connaught, Ontario, on July 7th, 1956. Mom and Dad were in the 63rd year of a marriage that was filled with love, happiness, music, and song.

Dad was born in Timmins on April 19th, 1927. He enjoyed a full and happy childhood as the youngest of a small family of adoring siblings and loving, supportive parents. His sister Ann enjoyed spoiling him and Dad was always grateful to his brother Joe for steering him towards medicine. Dad graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine in 1953, and received his Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) in 1963. Mom and Dad moved back to Timmins in 1963 and he practiced surgery until his retirement in 1999 at the age of 72. By all accounts Dad was a wise, intelligent, skilled and compassionate healer.

Dad had many interests, including photography, playing the violin, hunting, fishing, and puttering around our “camp” on Perry Lake. He was the last male member of the legendary “No Muss No Fuss That’s Us (NMNFTU)” group of friends and always spoke fondly of his “Italian Connection” fishing gang. He was one of the founding members of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra and hosted many rehearsals of this burgeoning group in our basement at 312 Toke.

Above all else, our husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend was happiest when in the company of others. He was at his best in the middle of a lively conversation, surrounded by family and friends, with a drink in his hand and music in the air.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Drs Larry Malo and Nancy Woods for their attentive and compassionate care during Dad’s long illness. Thanks also to the many doctors and health care professionals who crossed his path during several visits to the emergency and medical departments of TDH.

Thanks also for the professionalism and care of the personal support team from the Red Cross’s Assisted Living Program, Care Partners, and all of the professional service providers of the CCAC-LIN program who made it possible for Dad to live in the comfort of his own home.

We welcome everyone to come visit Dad and wish him a fond farewell this Thursday, May 23rd, from 6-9 p.m. at the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2019 the Miron-Wilson Funeral Chapel. (Fr. John Lemire officiating) with a reception to follow in the funeral home lounge. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that donations be made to the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation.
