It is with heavy hearts that we announce David’s peaceful passing on Monday, January 1, 2019 at the Timmins and District Hospital’s Palliative Care unit with his wife Christine Seguin by his side, along with his children Jacob (19), Liah (18) and Aaron (14) who had been with their dad to celebrate New Year’s Eve as usual, with Chinese food while watching the junior hockey game. Dave is survived by his mother Gwen Shaw, brothers Mathew (Julie) and Steve, sister Cheryl, as well as his nephews Owen, Zach (Avery) and his niece Olivia (Keanu) along with his mother-in-law Claire Seguin. He will be remembered by his cousins Sandy (Fred), Sheleigh and Sharlene Grant and their children. He will also be missed by his little buddy Charlee the bichon poodle he walked every night. Dave was predeceased by his father, John Shaw in December 2016.

Dave had many passions – hockey, baseball, reading (his mom brought the Toronto Star to him every day during his short illness), canoeing and, most important, coaching with Timmins Minor Hockey Association, Schumacher Day Minor Hockey, Ontario Women’s Association and the Laurentian Voyageur baseball team, and all the wonderful kids this allowed him to positively influence. He had many adventures with his buddies Jim Daschuk and Mark Kean along with many others. Dave was passionate about, and dedicated to his work as a Senior Advisor, Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines. He enjoyed the long lasting friendships he forged over the years with Chief Chad Boissoneau of Mattagami First Nation, and NAN Deputy Grand Chief Walter Naveau, as well as the First Nations of Wabun Tribal Council, Mushkegowuk Council and all of the Indigenous communities, organizations and individuals in Northeastern Ontario that he had the opportunity to work alongside.

Special thanks to Dave and Christine’s family, friends and co-workers at MCCSS, MENDM, MNRF, MOE, MTCS, MTO and IAO who provided many kindnesses including taking care of their children while they navigated the Cancer Centre in Sudbury when this ordeal started only three months ago on October 28, 2018. The children were certainly well fed during this difficult time. A very special thank you to Marnie Chisholm, Nurse Practitioner, who was a great listener and treated Dave as a person, not as a number, allowing him to remain in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his children and out of the hospital for as long as possible throughout his short battle. Also to Dr. Maisonneuve and Christianne who were only a phone call away; to Dave and Christine’s mothers, Gwen and Claire, who tirelessly made him chicken soup, Jello and upside down turkey; and to Mario and Ginette Colantonio who were present to the end.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 from 5-8 pm at the Miron-Wilson Funeral Home followed by words of remembrance. The family are planning a celebration of David’s life for the summer 2019. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations to an Education Fund for Jacob, Liah and Aaron, Timmins and District Hospital, in appreciation of their excellent Palliative Care unit or Kunuwanimano Child and Family Services. The funeral arrangements are entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
